A Brief History of Walton County
Walton County was organized in 1824, making it one of Florida's earliest territorial counties, and was named for George Walton Jr., who served as secretary of the Florida Territory in the 1820s.
Before American organization, the region had been part of British West Florida from 1763 to 1783, and some of its earliest American-era settlement centered on the Euchee Valley along the Choctawhatchee River. The county is also home to Britton Hill, the highest natural point in Florida.
Through the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century, the local economy rested on timber, naval stores such as turpentine and resin, and farming, before the county's Gulf-front communities began shifting toward tourism.
Walton County's Economy Today
Walton County's modern economy is dominated by tourism along its southern beach communities; in recent years the county has hosted several million visitors annually, generating billions of dollars in spending and supporting tens of thousands of jobs.
Visitor spending accounts for the large majority of overall economic activity in the county and provides a substantial net benefit to local government revenue, reducing the tax burden on year-round residents.
Away from the coast, the northern part of the county retains a more traditional economic base rooted in timber, agriculture, and general commerce, even as residential and commercial development continues to expand throughout the county.
