A Brief History of Taylor County

Taylor County was created on December 23, 1856, from Madison County, the same day neighboring Lafayette County was also formed. It was named for Zachary Taylor, the twelfth president of the United States, who had earlier commanded American forces during the Second Seminole War.

The county seat, originally known as Rosehead for the wild rose bushes common to the area, was renamed Perrytown in 1875, honoring a former Florida governor, before the name was later shortened to Perry.

By the early twentieth century, a resort built around a local sulfur spring drew visitors seeking its reputed healing waters, while the surrounding pine forests laid the groundwork for a timber and, eventually, pulp and paper industry that would dominate the local economy.

Taylor County's Economy Today

For decades, Taylor County's economy revolved around forest products, with a large pulp mill near Perry serving as the county's biggest manufacturing employer and contributing hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the regional economy.

The county has faced serious economic disruption recently, as the major cellulose mill closed in 2023 and a nearby sawmill followed in 2024, together eliminating a substantial share of local manufacturing jobs.

Beyond forest products, the county's economy includes agriculture, commercial fishing along its Gulf coastline, and public-sector employment through local government and schools, with officials now focused on attracting new industry.
