A Brief History of Sumter County

Sumter County was created on January 8, 1853, from territory previously part of Marion County, becoming Florida's twenty-ninth county. It was named for Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina militia leader during the American Revolution.

Much of what became eastern Sumter County had earlier been designated as Seminole reservation land under an 1823 treaty, and the area saw significant conflict during the Second Seminole War, including a well-known attack on U.S. troops near present-day Bushnell in December 1835.

For roughly a century after its founding, Sumter County remained a rural community built around cattle ranching and agriculture, with small towns serving as trading centers for surrounding farms well into the twentieth century.

Sumter County's Economy Today

The rise of The Villages retirement community over the past several decades fundamentally reshaped Sumter County's economy, shifting it away from its traditional agricultural base and toward services catering to a large, growing retiree population.

Health care, retail, hospitality, and leisure industries now dominate local employment, supported by an unusually large population of retirees; the county's median age is among the highest of any in the country.

Manufacturing has also expanded meaningfully in recent years, while cattle ranching, hay production, and other agriculture continue in areas outside the footprint of The Villages, preserving some of the county's earlier rural economic character.
