A Brief History of St. Lucie County
The name St. Lucie traces back to a short-lived Spanish colonial outpost, Santa Lucia, established near the Indian River area in the 1560s. The modern county was formed in the summer of 1905 out of the southern portion of Brevard County, with Fort Pierce chosen as its seat.
Before European settlement, the region was home to the Ais people, hunter-gatherers whose territory ran along the Indian River lagoon system. Fort Pierce, the county seat, took its name from a military post established during the era of the Seminole conflicts.
In its early decades as an organized county, the local economy centered on citrus groves, vegetable farming, and fishing along the Indian River, aided by drainage projects and railroad expansion that opened the area to broader settlement.
St. Lucie County's Economy Today
Today St. Lucie County's economy draws heavily on health care, education, construction, retail, and agriculture. Major hospital systems and a state college rank among the area's largest employers, alongside the county public school system.
Agriculture remains a meaningful contributor, with citrus, other fruits and vegetables, and cattle collectively adding hundreds of millions of dollars to the county each year, even though citrus acreage has declined markedly from its historical peak.
Tourism and manufacturing round out the local economic base, together supporting thousands of jobs, as continued population growth along the Treasure Coast has spurred residential and commercial development.
