Your fight is our fight.
A Brief History of Seminole County
Seminole County came into being on April 25, 1913, when the Florida Legislature carved it out of the northern part of Orange County, responding to residents around Sanford who wanted a courthouse closer to home. The name honors the Seminole people who lived throughout the peninsula.
Long before the county was formally organized, the St. Johns River corridor supported steamboat trade and small farming communities. Sanford, later the county seat, grew into a shipping point for produce and earned a reputation as a center of celery farming in the early twentieth century.
Following its creation, the county remained largely agricultural for decades before the postwar expansion of Orlando and construction of the interstate highway system reshaped it into a suburban community, as citrus groves and vegetable fields gradually gave way to residential subdivisions.
Seminole County's Economy Today
Positioned within the greater Orlando metropolitan area, Seminole County today supports a varied economy anchored by health care and social assistance, professional and technical services, and retail trade, which together employ the largest shares of the local workforce.
The county has cultivated a reputation within the region's high-tech corridor, drawing engineering, optics, and technology-oriented firms alongside more traditional office and administrative employers.
Even as suburban development has replaced much of its farmland, Seminole County retains pockets of agriculture and a strong emphasis on parks, lakes, and natural lands, with the local economy reflecting a mature, largely residential community built around service industries and a well-educated commuter workforce.
