Long before European settlement, the area now known as Sarasota County was home to the Calusa, Tocobaga, and Timucua peoples. Sustained American settlement began in earnest when William H. Whitaker received a land grant along Sarasota Bay in 1851.

The city of Sarasota incorporated as a town in 1902 and later as a city, and in 1921 Sarasota County itself was formally separated from the much larger Manatee County, with the city of Sarasota named as the new county's seat.
