A Brief History of Sarasota County

Long before European settlement, the area now known as Sarasota County was home to the Calusa, Tocobaga, and Timucua peoples. Sustained American settlement began in earnest when William H. Whitaker received a land grant along Sarasota Bay in 1851.

The city of Sarasota incorporated as a town in 1902 and later as a city, and in 1921 Sarasota County itself was formally separated from the much larger Manatee County, with the city of Sarasota named as the new county's seat.

The county's cultural identity was reshaped in 1927 when circus owner John Ringling relocated the winter headquarters of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from Connecticut to Sarasota, which quickly became one of Florida's most popular early tourist attractions.

Sarasota County's Economy Today

Tourism remains a cornerstone of Sarasota County's economy, with visitor spending generating billions of dollars in annual economic impact and supporting tens of thousands of hospitality-related jobs.

Health care ranks among the county's largest employment sectors, driven in part by an aging population and anchored by a major regional hospital system that stands as the county's single largest employer.

Arts and culture remain closely tied to the local economy and identity, reflected in institutions such as the Ringling Museum of Art and a well-regarded college focused on the arts, both legacies of John Ringling's early 20th century investment in the area.
