Your fight is our fight.
A Brief History of Port St. Lucie
As late as the 1950s, the land that would become Port St. Lucie was mostly undeveloped, dotted with a fishing camp and a handful of farms. That changed in 1958, when the General Development Corporation, founded by the Mackle brothers, purchased roughly 40,000 acres along the St. Lucie River.
The 'St. Lucie' portion of the name descends from a much older settlement said to have been established on St. Lucia's Day in 1566. The 'Port' portion, by contrast, was largely a marketing choice, even though no deep-water seaport ever existed there.
General Development Corporation built the area's first bridge over the St. Lucie River in 1959, and the community became an incorporated city on April 27, 1961, growing steadily over the following decades into one of Florida's largest cities by population.
Port St. Lucie's Economy Today
Health care has become one of Port St. Lucie's most significant economic pillars, anchored by facilities such as Cleveland Clinic's Tradition Hospital and HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, which together employ a substantial share of the local workforce.
Industrial and logistics activity has expanded considerably around Legacy Park at Tradition, one of Florida's larger master-planned industrial parks, home to large distribution facilities and manufacturers producing building products, tires, and other consumer goods.
Government and education employment provides a stable base of jobs, while an emerging biosciences and healthcare-innovation cluster points toward continued diversification of a local economy once built almost entirely on residential land sales.
