A Brief History of Pinellas County
The name Pinellas comes from the Spanish phrase 'Punta Pinal,' meaning point of pines, a description applied to the peninsula by early Spanish explorers. Long before European contact, the peninsula was home to the Tocobaga people.
The peninsula was initially incorporated into the much larger Hillsborough County when that county was organized in 1834, and permanent non-native settlement began the following year when Odet Philippe, a French immigrant, became the area's first lasting resident.
Local residents eventually sought independence from Hillsborough County's government, and following a successful referendum, Pinellas became Florida's 48th county on January 1, 1912.
Pinellas County's Economy Today
Tourism remains a leading driver of Pinellas County's economy, with the county's beaches and cultural attractions drawing millions of overnight visitors each year and generating billions of dollars in economic impact.
The county also carries one of Florida's largest manufacturing bases, particularly in electronics and medical devices, and is home to the corporate headquarters of several nationally recognized companies in logistics, technology, and financial services.
Health care and life sciences have grown into major employment sectors as well, anchored by prominent hospital systems and a St. Petersburg innovation district that has attracted a growing number of startups and research-oriented firms.
