A Brief History of Palm Beach County

Before the 1890s, the area that became Palm Beach County had only scattered settlement, largely centered on homesteaders living along the shores of Lake Worth. That began to change when railroad and hotel developer Henry Flagler visited the region and decided to invest heavily in transforming it into a resort destination.

Flagler's plans called for an exclusive resort community on the barrier island of Palm Beach paired with a working city across the lake, a settlement that grew into West Palm Beach and was incorporated in 1894 as the area's first municipality.

The name Palm Beach predates Flagler's arrival, originating from a grove of coconut palms that sprouted along the shoreline after a ship carrying a cargo of coconuts wrecked nearby in 1878.
