A Brief History of Palm Bay
European-descended settlers began arriving at the mouth of Turkey Creek in the 1870s, forming a small riverside community that took the name Tillman in honor of early resident John Tillman, with a post office opening under that name in 1887.
By the 1920s, residents felt the name Tillman no longer suited a place ringed by native sabal palms and scenic waterways, and in 1925 they successfully petitioned to rename the community Palm Bay.
Palm Bay incorporated as a city in 1960, just as the nearby aerospace buildup around Cape Canaveral and Patrick Air Force Base was accelerating. Large-scale land development tied to the space program and defense contracting drove much of the city's population growth.
Palm Bay's Economy Today
Palm Bay's economy remains closely tied to the aerospace and defense industry that took root with the Space Coast's growth. L3Harris Technologies keeps major operations centered in the city, making it one of the anchors of Florida's aerospace and defense sector.
Manufacturing tied to electronics and defense contracting employs a substantial share of the local workforce, complemented by construction activity tied to continued residential expansion, along with health care and retail trade.
Palm Bay's proximity to Kennedy Space Center and other Brevard County space and defense installations continues to shape its labor market, drawing engineering, technical, and skilled manufacturing jobs.
