A Brief History of Monroe County

Monroe County was established on July 3, 1823, carved out of the much larger St. Johns County by Florida's territorial legislature only two years after the United States acquired the peninsula from Spain. Key West, at the southernmost tip of the county, was quickly designated the seat of government and became the center of early settlement and commerce in the region.

The county takes its name from James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, who was in office when the county was formed — a common practice for naming Florida's new territorial counties in the 1820s. Monroe had no personal connection to the Keys; the tribute reflected the political customs of the era.

Key West grew into Florida's largest and, for a time, wealthiest city on the strength of maritime salvage ("wrecking"), sponging, cigar manufacturing, and fishing. Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad reached Key West in 1912, connecting the Keys to the mainland for the first time, until a powerful hurricane destroyed much of the line in 1935.

Monroe County's Economy Today

Today Monroe County's economy centers overwhelmingly on tourism and outdoor recreation, drawing visitors to the Florida Keys for diving, fishing, boating, and the distinctive character of Key West and the surrounding islands.
