Miramar traces its roots to 1953, when developer A.L. Mailman purchased a tract of land with the idea of building an affordable bedroom community within reach of the jobs and amenities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. His first phase of construction consisted of dozens of modest, flat-roofed concrete-block houses aimed at working families.

The city took its name from the Miramar district of Havana, Cuba, where Mailman kept a summer home; in Spanish the word roughly translates to 'view of the sea.' The community incorporated on May 26, 1955, at which point it counted fewer than 200 residents.

What began as a tiny subdivision expanded steadily through the later twentieth century as South Florida's population boomed outward from the coast. Annexations and new residential construction through the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s transformed Miramar into one of Broward County's largest and most ethnically diverse cities.
