Your fight is our fight.
A Brief History of Martin County
Martin County was formed on May 30, 1925, when the Florida legislature combined the northern part of Palm Beach County with the southern part of St. Lucie County, part of a wave of new county creation during Florida's 1920s land boom. Stuart was designated the county seat.
The county was named for John W. Martin, who was serving as Florida's governor at the time of its creation, one of the relatively few Florida counties named for a sitting official rather than a historical figure.
Citrus groves and cattle ranching, particularly around the inland community of Indiantown, took root as major economic activities in the county's early decades, while the Atlantic coastline and the St. Lucie Inlet drew fishermen and, gradually, tourists.
Martin County's Economy Today
Healthcare has become one of Martin County's largest economic pillars, with the local hospital system operating multiple facilities that employ thousands of residents. Retail, professional services, and public-sector jobs round out much of the remaining employment base.
Agriculture still shapes roughly half of the county's land area, with citrus and cattle operations concentrated around Indiantown continuing a tradition that stretches back nearly a century. Marine industries, including boatbuilding and repair, along with commercial and recreational fishing, remain closely tied to Martin County's identity along the Treasure Coast.
Tourism tied to beaches, boating, and eco-recreation contributes meaningfully to the local economy. In recent years, aerospace manufacturing has also taken hold in Stuart, with aircraft-component production adding a new dimension to the local economy.
