A Brief History of Marion County

Marion County was created on March 14, 1844, from portions of Alachua, Hillsborough, and the area then known as Mosquito, later renamed Orange, County. Its formation came near the end of Florida's territorial period, as settlers pushed into the interior of the peninsula following the Second Seminole War.

The county's name honors Francis Marion, the South Carolina Revolutionary War guerrilla leader nicknamed the "Swamp Fox," chosen because many early settlers had migrated from South Carolina. The county seat, Ocala, took its name from a Timucuan village recorded by Spanish explorers in the 16th century and was formally designated in 1846.

Rail service reached Ocala in 1881, and the discovery of rich phosphate deposits near Dunnellon in 1889 touched off a mining boom that drew investment and workers to the county through the turn of the century. Citrus growing also flourished in Marion County's soil and climate during this period, well before the horse farms for which the county later became known.

Marion County's Economy Today

Marion County has built a national reputation as a center of the horse industry, branding itself the "Horse Capital of the World" on the strength of tens of thousands of horses and more than a thousand equine operations spread across its pastureland. Breeding, training, veterinary care, and related services tied to the equine industry account for a substantial share of local jobs.

Beyond horses, healthcare and manufacturing employ large numbers of Marion County residents, with hospital systems and manufacturers of specialty vehicles and equipment ranking among the county's biggest employers. Distribution and logistics operations have also expanded in recent years.

Ocala's growth as a regional hub for retail, healthcare, and services has been reinforced by newer draws such as a large equestrian events center that has broadened the horse industry's reach into hospitality and tourism.
