A Brief History of Levy County

Levy County was established on March 10, 1845, carved from a larger surrounding area shortly after the end of the Second Seminole War, making it one of Florida's older counties. It was named for David Levy Yulee, a territorial delegate and later U.S. senator who became the first person of Jewish heritage to serve in both chambers of Congress, and who built the state's first cross-Florida railroad linking Fernandina to Cedar Key.

The county seat moved several times in its early decades, from a settlement once known informally as Sodom, to Mount Pleasant, then to Levyville, before finally settling in Bronson in 1874. Cedar Key, meanwhile, grew into a significant commercial center thanks to its port and rail connection, and by the late 1800s it had become known for cedar mills that processed local timber into pencil slats shipped to manufacturers.

Fishing, oystering, and later sponge harvesting sustained coastal communities through the late 1800s and into the 1900s, while inland areas supported timber and turpentine operations. Phosphate mining also touched the region in the early twentieth century, part of a broader industry active across north-central Florida.

Levy County's Economy Today

Levy County's economy today remains closely tied to natural resources, agriculture, and its Gulf Coast location. The county is recognized as one of the nation's leading producers of farm-raised clams, an industry built around its estuaries and coastal waters near Cedar Key.

Beyond aquaculture, the local economy includes retail trade, construction, and healthcare and social assistance as leading sources of employment, along with a meaningful public administration sector. Small and independently owned businesses make up a significant share of the local business community.

Tourism tied to natural springs, Gulf Coast fishing, and outdoor recreation contributes to the local economy as well, complementing the county's agricultural and aquaculture base. Overall, Levy County remains more rural and resource-based than many other Florida counties.
