A Brief History of Leon County

Leon County was established in 1824, carved from the frontier lands of Escambia and Gadsden counties in the earliest years of Florida's territorial government. The county takes its name from Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, the first European to set foot in Florida. That same year, a search for a site between the rival cities of St. Augustine and Pensacola led territorial commissioners to a spot they judged unusually fertile and well suited to become Florida's new capital. That site became Tallahassee, and Leon County has served as the seat of Florida's state government ever since.

Following Florida statehood in 1845, Leon County's fertile soil fueled a plantation economy built on cotton, and by the years leading up to the Civil War it had become the wealthiest county in the state. On March 6, 1865, Confederate defenders, including cadets called up from the West Florida Seminary, turned back a Union advance at the Battle of Natural Bridge just south of Tallahassee. It is the only Civil War fighting Leon County ever saw, and it helped keep Tallahassee the sole Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi that Union troops never captured.

In the decades that followed, the county's economy shifted from cotton toward cattle and dairy farming, aided by new rail service through the region. Through the 20th century, growth in state government and higher education transformed Leon County from a rural farming community into the government, education, and legal hub it is today.
