Lee County was created on May 13, 1887, when it split off from Monroe County, an area so large at the time that its northern reaches felt disconnected from the county government based in Key West. The new county was named for Robert E. Lee, the former Confederate general, and Fort Myers, already established as a small settlement around a former military outpost, became the county seat.

Fort Myers had originated decades earlier as a U.S. Army fort during the Seminole Wars, and after the Civil War it grew slowly around cattle ranching and fishing along the Caloosahatchee River.
