A Brief History of Lanier County
Lanier County ranks among Georgia's newest counties, formed through legislative acts passed in 1919 and 1920 that combined territory taken from Berrien, Clinch, and Lowndes counties into a single new jurisdiction.
Its name honors Sidney Lanier, a Macon-born poet who practiced law, served in the Confederate Army, and later lectured at Johns Hopkins University before his death in 1881.
The county seat, Lakeland, began as a small mill settlement known as Alapaha before taking on its present name and becoming the administrative center of the newly formed county.
Lanier County's Economy Today
Lanier County has kept a strongly rural, agricultural character, with area farms historically producing cotton, tobacco, peanuts, and pine products.
In more recent years, education and health and social services have grown into the county's largest employment sectors, shaped partly by a hospital, a state correctional facility, and proximity to Moody Air Force Base.
The county's lakes and a nature reserve add a recreational dimension to the local economy, drawing visitors even as Lakeland has retained much of its small-town character.
