A Brief History of Jones County
Jones County was established on December 10, 1807, one of several new counties the legislature carved that day from territory that had briefly been part of Baldwin County.
The county took its name from James Jones, a Savannah attorney who served in the Georgia legislature and later in the United States Congress.
Clinton served as the original county seat, but as commerce and rail traffic shifted over the nineteenth century, the town of Gray grew into the county's leading commercial center and was formally named county seat in 1905.
Jones County's Economy Today
Jones County functions today largely as a residential community for people working in the neighboring Macon metropolitan area, with a substantial share of the workforce commuting daily.
That regional connection includes ties to the aerospace and logistics activity clustered around Robins Air Force Base, one of the largest employment centers in middle Georgia.
Within the county itself, local government and the school system are among the largest direct employers, while agriculture and forestry continue to occupy a meaningful place in the local economy.
