A Brief History of Johnson County

The Georgia legislature formed Johnson County on December 11, 1858, assembling it from sections of Emanuel, Laurens, and Washington counties in the east-central part of the state.

The new county's name recognized Herschel Vespasian Johnson, who had served as Georgia's governor in the mid-1850s and later represented the state in the Confederate Senate.

Wrightsville, chosen as the county seat, was laid out in 1859 on acreage donated by a local landowner and was formally incorporated a few years later, in 1866.

Johnson County's Economy Today

Johnson County has long been a small, rural community in east-central Georgia, and agriculture, particularly row crops and timber, shaped its economy for much of its history.

In recent years, construction, manufacturing, and transportation and warehousing have emerged as leading sources of employment for county residents.

Wrightsville continues to serve as the administrative and commercial hub of the county, home to a local chamber of commerce and economic development authority.
