A Brief History of Jacksonville

Before it carried its current name, the area along the St. Johns River where cattle crossed at a narrow point was known to the Seminole as Wacca Pilatka and to British colonists as Cow Ford. American settlers platted a new town on the site in 1822.

The new settlement was named Jacksonville in honor of Andrew Jackson, who had served as Florida's first military governor, even though Jackson himself never actually visited the town that bore his name. The city grew steadily as a river port and rail terminus through the nineteenth century.

Jacksonville's modern boundaries date to a landmark 1967 referendum in which voters approved consolidating the city government with Duval County, a merger that took effect in October 1968, making Jacksonville the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States.

Jacksonville's Economy Today

Jacksonville's economy is unusually diversified for a Florida city, with banking and financial services forming one of its largest sectors, with major national and international banks maintaining substantial operations in the city.

Logistics and transportation form another pillar of the local economy, anchored by JAXPORT, one of Florida's busiest container and vehicle-handling ports, along with extensive rail and trucking networks.

The U.S. military maintains one of its largest concentrations on the East Coast in Jacksonville, with multiple naval air stations contributing billions of dollars annually to the local economy, alongside major hospital systems and academic medical centers.
