Hernando County was created on February 24, 1843, from a portion of Alachua County, and was named for the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who traveled through the Florida peninsula during his sixteenth-century expedition.

In 1844 the county was briefly renamed Benton County, honoring Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, before the legislature restored the original Hernando name in 1850 after Benton's political positions shifted in ways unpopular with local residents.
