A Brief History of Hernando County

Hernando County was created on February 24, 1843, from a portion of Alachua County, and was named for the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who traveled through the Florida peninsula during his sixteenth-century expedition.

In 1844 the county was briefly renamed Benton County, honoring Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, before the legislature restored the original Hernando name in 1850 after Benton's political positions shifted in ways unpopular with local residents.

Well before territorial settlement, Upper Creek families who had migrated from Alabama in the late 1700s established communities in the area and eventually became part of the broader Seminole population. Agriculture, timber, and eventually citrus growing shaped the county's economy for much of the following century.

Hernando County's Economy Today

Hernando County's economy today is anchored by healthcare, retail, and construction, its three largest employment sectors, alongside a growing manufacturing presence that includes aerospace supply, electronics, and plastics production.

Major employers include the county school board, area hospitals, and large retailers, reflecting a mix of public-sector and service-industry jobs typical of a growing county on Florida's west-central Gulf Coast.

Population growth has driven steady increases in construction and healthcare employment in recent years, and county officials continue courting aviation, logistics, and light manufacturing companies drawn by highway access and proximity to the Tampa Bay metropolitan market.
