A Brief History of Hendry County

Hendry County was established on May 11, 1923, when the Florida Legislature separated it from Lee County. It was named for Francis A. Hendry, a Confederate veteran, cattle rancher, and state legislator remembered as one of South Florida's most prominent cattlemen.

The area's recorded settlement stretches back to the early 1800s, when French trader Pierre Denaud operated a trading post near the site of today's LaBelle. During the Seminole Wars, U.S. troops established forts along the Caloosahatchee River, among the region's first permanent outposts.

LaBelle, the eventual county seat, was named for Hendry's two daughters, Laura and Belle. Over the following decades, sugar cane cultivation began expanding across the county's eastern reaches, gradually becoming one of the defining features of the local landscape.

Hendry County's Economy Today

Sugar cane growing, milling, and refining remain central to Hendry County's economy, with large agribusiness operations dominating the eastern part of the county. The harvest season drives a distinct seasonal employment cycle that shapes hiring, housing, and commerce each year.

Beyond sugar, the county's agricultural base includes citrus groves, cattle ranching, vegetable farming, and sod production. The Seminole Tribe of Florida also maintains a significant economic presence through its Big Cypress Reservation, which includes cattle operations and gaming enterprises.

County and school district government provide substantial public employment, complementing the private agricultural sector. Hendry County has also been working to diversify beyond farming, with plans for an international cargo airport intended to bring logistics and transportation jobs.
