Hendry County was established on May 11, 1923, when the Florida Legislature separated it from Lee County. It was named for Francis A. Hendry, a Confederate veteran, cattle rancher, and state legislator remembered as one of South Florida's most prominent cattlemen.

The area's recorded settlement stretches back to the early 1800s, when French trader Pierre Denaud operated a trading post near the site of today's LaBelle. During the Seminole Wars, U.S. troops established forts along the Caloosahatchee River, among the region's first permanent outposts.
