A Brief History of Gordon County
Gordon County was formed on February 13, 1850, out of portions of Cass County, later renamed Bartow, and neighboring Floyd County. It honors William Washington Gordon, the first Georgian to graduate from West Point.
The county seat began as a small settlement known as Dawsonville before being renamed Calhoun in 1850 to honor U.S. Senator John C. Calhoun following his death that year.
Agriculture, particularly wheat, corn, oats, and cotton, drove the county's recovery in the years following the Civil War, and by the early twentieth century cotton mills had introduced textile manufacturing to the local economy.
Gordon County's Economy Today
Gordon County today is closely associated with the carpet and flooring industry that grew out of its early textile mills, with major manufacturers maintaining significant operations in the county.
One of the world's largest flooring manufacturers is headquartered in the county, and several other major flooring and carpet producers maintain substantial local operations, making manufacturing the backbone of Gordon County's economy.
Beyond flooring and textiles, the county has attracted diverse manufacturing investment, including chemical processing and construction machinery production.
