A Brief History of Glades County
Glades County was formed on April 23, 1921 from part of DeSoto County, one of several new Florida counties created in the early 1920s. It takes its name from the Everglades, even though only a small section of the county actually lies within the Everglades proper.
Moore Haven was designated the county seat, situated along the northwestern shore of Lake Okeechobee. The Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation, home to part of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, lies within the county's borders today.
Drainage and agricultural development around Lake Okeechobee in the early twentieth century reshaped the local landscape and economy, opening rich muck soils south of the lake to farming.
Glades County's Economy Today
Glades County sits within the Everglades Agricultural Area, and its economy remains heavily dependent on farming, particularly the cultivation of sugarcane in rotation with sweet corn, winter vegetables, and other row crops.
Sugar producers and cooperatives headquartered in the region are dominant agricultural employers, supporting several area sugar mills, while cattle ranching remains part of the local agricultural mix as well.
Modern mechanization has reduced the number of workers needed on-site for planting and harvesting compared with earlier decades, though the county's farms still draw seasonal migrant labor during harvest periods.
