Gilchrist County, created on December 4, 1925, was the last of Florida's sixty-seven counties to be formed. It was carved from the western part of Alachua County after residents there grew frustrated with the long, poor-quality roads connecting them to the county seat in Gainesville.

Legislators initially considered other names for the new county before ultimately settling on Gilchrist to honor former Florida governor Albert Waller Gilchrist, who was gravely ill at the time and died within months.
