A Brief History of Fort Lauderdale

The name Fort Lauderdale comes from a series of small forts built along the New River during the Second Seminole War in the late 1830s, one under the command of Major William Lauderdale. Little permanent settlement followed immediately.

Modern Fort Lauderdale traces its founding more directly to Frank Stranahan, who arrived in 1893 to manage a river ferry crossing and built a trading post that became a hub for commerce with the local Seminole community.

As rail service and roads reached the area in the early twentieth century, the small trading settlement grew quickly enough to incorporate as a city in 1911. Dredging of canals in subsequent decades gave Fort Lauderdale its distinctive network of navigable channels.

Fort Lauderdale's Economy Today

Fort Lauderdale's economy is unusually diversified for a city its size, spanning marine industries, tourism, finance, technology, and aerospace manufacturing. The city markets itself as the yachting capital of the world.

Port Everglades, one of the busiest cruise ports on earth and a major cargo terminal, generates billions of dollars in regional economic activity and supports tens of thousands of jobs tied to shipping, logistics, and passenger cruising.

Beyond the waterfront, Fort Lauderdale has built a growing base of financial services, insurance, real estate, and technology firms, along with aerospace and avionics manufacturers.
