Your fight is our fight.
A Brief History of Forsyth County
Forsyth County was created by the same December 3, 1832 legislative act that divided the old, much larger Cherokee County into ten smaller units across north Georgia. The new county was named for John Forsyth, a Georgia governor, U.S. senator, and diplomat.
Gold drew the county's earliest wave of settlers, since Forsyth sat within the region opened by Georgia's 1832 gold lottery. Cumming, laid out in 1834, became the county seat thanks to its central position amid the scattered gold camps and farms.
The gold boom faded by the early 1840s. Forsyth County spent the following decades as a rural, cotton-farming community that Reconstruction left economically depressed even though the Civil War itself largely bypassed the area.
Forsyth County's Economy Today
Forsyth County's economy has been transformed since the late twentieth century by its position along the Georgia 400 corridor connecting it to Atlanta, turning a once-agricultural county into one of the wealthiest and fastest-growing in the nation.
A cluster of technology and professional-services firms has grown up along the stretch of GA 400 that state lawmakers have formally branded a technology corridor, drawing hundreds of companies and skilled tech workers.
Healthcare, retail, and residential construction round out the county's economy, all expanding in step with a population that has grown rapidly for more than two decades.
