A Brief History of Flagler County

Flagler County was created in 1917 by Florida Governor Sidney J. Catts, formed from portions of Volusia and St. Johns counties. It was named for Henry Flagler, the industrialist and Standard Oil co-founder whose railroad and hotel investments opened Florida's east coast to development.

The honor reflected Flagler's outsized influence across the entire Atlantic coast rather than any local connection, since his Florida East Coast Railway had made settlement and commerce possible in towns up and down the coastline.

For much of the twentieth century Flagler County remained sparsely populated and largely agricultural. That changed dramatically beginning in the 1970s with the development of the planned community of Palm Coast, which transformed the county into one of the fastest-growing in the nation.
