Your fight is our fight.

A Brief History of Fayette County

Fayette County came into being in 1821, carved out of land the state acquired from the Creek Nation under the Treaty of Indian Springs. Georgia surveyors laid the new territory into roughly 202-acre parcels and distributed them through a land lottery open to Revolutionary War veterans and widows raising young children.

Both the county and its seat, Fayetteville, take their name from the Marquis de Lafayette, the French nobleman who crossed the Atlantic to fight alongside George Washington during the Revolutionary War, a fitting choice given how many of its earliest landowners were themselves veterans of that war.

Cotton dominated Fayette County's economy through most of the nineteenth century. The Civil War disrupted that economy badly, but recovery accelerated once the Atlanta and Florida rail line reached Fayetteville in 1888, connecting local farmers and merchants to wider markets.

Fayette County's Economy Today

Fayette County's modern economy owes much of its shape to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, whose steady expansion beginning in the 1970s turned the once-rural county into one of metro Atlanta's most sought-after suburban addresses.

In recent years the county has become closely associated with film and television production, anchored by the sprawling studio complex in Fayetteville now known as Trilith Studios, previously branded Pinewood Atlanta, which has reshaped local tax revenue and employment.

Beyond entertainment, Fayette County's economy rests on healthcare, corporate offices, and retail serving its suburban population, with Piedmont Fayette Hospital anchoring the local healthcare sector.
