A Brief History of Fannin County

Fannin County was formed on January 21, 1854, when Georgia's governor signed legislation dividing land from Union and Gilmer counties to create the state's 107th county, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The county was named for James Walker Fannin Jr., a Georgia-born soldier killed along with hundreds of his men following their capture during the Texas Revolution at Goliad in 1836.

A subsistence farming economy dominated the county's early decades before timber harvesting and copper mining emerged by the mid-nineteenth century. The 1886 arrival of the railroad spurred the growth of Blue Ridge.

Fannin County's Economy Today

Tourism now dominates Fannin County's economy, drawing substantial annual economic activity to the Blue Ridge Mountains area through outdoor recreation, mountain cabin rentals, and small-town attractions.

Second-home and vacation-property development has become a significant economic driver as well, with mountain land increasingly valued for recreational and retirement use rather than agriculture.

Retail, hospitality, and food service industries have expanded considerably to serve both tourists and a growing seasonal and part-time resident population.
