A Brief History of Duval County

Duval County was created on August 12, 1822 out of St. Johns County, only a year after Florida became a U.S. territory. It was named for William Pope Duval, who served as the territory's first civilian governor.

Jacksonville, the county seat, grew up around a shallow crossing point on the St. Johns River known to early travelers as the Cow Ford. Settlers who platted the town in the early 1820s named it after Andrew Jackson rather than after Duval himself.

On October 1, 1968, the governments of Jacksonville and Duval County merged into a single consolidated city-county government, one of the first and largest such consolidations in the country, helping Jacksonville grow into by far the largest city by land area in Florida.

Duval County's Economy Today

Duval County's economy is unusually diversified for a Florida metro area, spanning health care, financial services, logistics, aviation, and information technology, making the local job market less vulnerable to downturns in any single industry.

The Jacksonville area's deepwater port, JAXPORT, ranks among the nation's busiest for handling automobiles and is served by three interstate highways and three major freight railroads, making transportation and logistics a longstanding pillar of the local economy.

Major private employers include large health systems and sizable insurance and financial firms headquartered in the city. Continued population growth has fueled parallel expansion in retail, construction, professional services, and logistics-related employment.
