Dixie County was formed on April 25, 1921 out of the southern portion of Lafayette County, part of a wave of new Florida counties created in the early twentieth century. Its name simply borrows the familiar nickname long used for the American South rather than referencing any specific person or event.

The Big Bend region where Dixie County sits had passed through a long succession of county boundaries and jurisdictions in the century after Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821. Cross City was chosen as the seat of the new county.
