A Brief History of Crawford County

Crawford County was created in December 1822 from Houston County. The new county was named for William Harris Crawford, a prominent Georgia statesman who served as a U.S. senator, minister to France, and secretary of the treasury.

Among the area's first residents were federal Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins and his family, who had settled there as early as 1803 to operate a plantation and trading post. The legislature designated Knoxville as county seat shortly after.

Knoxville later became notable as the birthplace of Jefferson Franklin Long, who was born enslaved in the town and went on to become Georgia's first African American member of Congress during Reconstruction.

Crawford County's Economy Today

Crawford County's economy today draws on a mix of agriculture, timber, and small-scale manufacturing, with poultry, peaches, pecans, and blueberries among the notable farm products grown in the county.

Health care and social assistance has emerged as one of the county's largest employment sectors in recent years, alongside construction and retail trade.

Reliable utilities and relatively low costs have helped Crawford County retain and attract modest industrial and logistics activity, even as agriculture and timber remain central to its economic identity.
