A Brief History of Cobb County
Cobb County was created in December 1832 from land that had belonged to the Cherokee Nation. It was named for Thomas Willis Cobb, a Georgia lawyer who had served as a U.S. representative, senator, and state judge.
Marietta, settled in 1833 and named the county seat the following year, is believed to have taken its name from Cobb's wife, Mary. The town became a focal point of fighting during the 1864 Atlanta campaign, including nearby engagements at Kennesaw Mountain.
Through the twentieth century, Cobb County transformed from a rural county into one of metro Atlanta's largest suburban centers, driven in large part by aerospace manufacturing that arrived during and after World War II.
