A Brief History of Clarke County

Clarke County was carved out of Jackson County by the Georgia legislature in 1801. Lawmakers named it for Elijah Clarke, a North Carolina-born frontiersman who settled in Wilkes County before the Revolution and became known for leading Patriot militia to victory at the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779.

That same year, the town of Athens was laid out on the banks of the Oconee River to serve as the seat of the newly chartered University of Georgia, established in 1785 as the nation's first state-chartered public university.

In 1990, residents voted to merge the city of Athens and Clarke County into a single consolidated government, Athens-Clarke County, becoming only the second such unified city-county in Georgia.
