A Brief History of Chattooga County

Chattooga County was created in December 1838 from parts of Walker and Floyd counties, in the far northwest corner of Georgia, and named for the Chattooga River that runs through the region. The county seat was first called Selma before being renamed Summerville in 1840.

Farming dominated Chattooga County's economy through the nineteenth century, with small family farms discovering that the local soil and climate suited peach and strawberry cultivation.

Textile manufacturing transformed the county's economy in the early twentieth century, beginning with a mill in Summerville in 1907 and expanding through mills such as those in Trion. Textile production peaked during and after World War II before beginning a long decline.
