A Brief History of Chattahoochee County

Chattahoochee County was formed on February 13, 1854, from parts of Muscogee and Marion counties, taking its name from the Chattahoochee River, which forms the county's western border.

Cusseta, the county seat, was surveyed and its lots auctioned off in 1854, taking its name from a prominent Muscogee (Creek) town that had once stood in the region. Nineteenth-century Chattahoochee County was overwhelmingly agricultural.

The county's character changed dramatically in 1918 with the establishment of what became Fort Benning, a massive Army training post. Renamed Fort Moore in 2023, the post has remained the single most significant presence in the county for more than a century.

Chattahoochee County's Economy Today

Fort Moore, the Army post that occupies most of the county's territory, dominates Chattahoochee County's economy, and government-related employment remains the leading source of local jobs.

Because so much of the county's land lies within the military post, Chattahoochee County has one of the smallest civilian populations of any Georgia county, and its economy is correspondingly narrow.
