A Brief History of Charlton County
Charlton County was created by the Georgia General Assembly on February 18, 1854, from land taken out of Camden County. It was named for Robert M. Charlton, a former U.S. senator from Georgia who died the same year the county was formed.
Folkston, now the county seat, grew up around a railway depot after track reached the area in 1881. It replaced the older river community of Traders Hill as county seat in 1901.
Timber has long dominated Charlton County's land use, a legacy of its position bordering the vast Okefenokee Swamp, which covers a large share of the county's southern reaches.
