A Brief History of Carroll County

Carroll County was created on June 9, 1825, and named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The county seat's name has an odd political backstory: residents wanted to call it Troupsville after Georgia governor George Troup, but the state legislature, controlled by Troup's political opponents, named it Carrollton instead. A gold discovery at Pine Mountain in 1830 briefly turned the area into a mining boomtown.

Cotton dominated Carroll County's economy through the late 1800s. Industrialization arrived with the Mandeville Mills textile plant in 1890, and manufacturing took further root in 1950 when Roy Richards Sr. founded Southwire, a wire and cable manufacturer that would grow into a major national company.
