A Brief History of Cape Coral

Cape Coral owes its existence to two Baltimore brothers, Leonard and Jack Rosen, who had built a national business selling hair care products before turning to Florida real estate. In 1957 they purchased a large, largely undeveloped peninsula in Lee County known as Redfish Point.

Through their company, Gulf American Land Corporation, the Rosens marketed the new development as a 'Waterfront Wonderland,' dredging an extensive network of canals so that a large share of homesites would have water access, a concept aggressively promoted to buyers who often purchased lots without ever visiting.

Growth accelerated once the Cape Coral Bridge opened in 1964, finally linking the peninsula to Fort Myers by car. What began as a speculative subdivision was incorporated as a city and grew into one of the largest municipalities in Southwest Florida, retaining its distinctive maze of man-made waterways.

Cape Coral's Economy Today

Cape Coral's modern economy still bears the imprint of its origins as a residential development, with construction and real estate remaining significant contributors as the city continues to build out remaining subdivided lots.

Healthcare has grown into one of the region's largest employment sectors, with hospital systems serving Cape Coral and the broader Fort Myers area now ranking among the top employers in Lee County.

The city's hundreds of miles of navigable canals continue to support a notable boating, marine services, and waterfront tourism sector, and local officials have promoted light industrial and manufacturing growth to diversify the economy.
