Calhoun County was formed in 1854 from parts of Early and Baker counties in Georgia's rural southwest, and was named for John C. Calhoun, the South Carolina statesman who had served as U.S. vice president.

Two rival communities, Concord and Whitney, both wanted to serve as county seat, and the dispute was reportedly settled by measuring the distance between the two towns and splitting it in half. The town that grew up at that halfway point was incorporated in 1856 as Morgan.

Like much of southwest Georgia, Calhoun County developed as an agricultural community built around cotton, corn, and other row crops, worked first by enslaved labor and later by tenant farmers.
