A Brief History of Burke County

Burke County is one of Georgia's original counties, created in 1777 out of what had been the colonial parish of St. George. Legislators renamed the area for Edmund Burke, the British parliamentarian who had argued for conciliation with the American colonies. The county seat, Waynesboro, was named for Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne.

By the early 1800s, large plantations worked by enslaved laborers had displaced the county's original pattern of small farms, and Burke became one of Georgia's major cotton-producing counties, with tenant farming and sharecropping organizing agricultural life for generations after the Civil War.

Cotton remained central to the county's identity through much of the twentieth century, until the construction of Plant Vogtle, a nuclear power facility that began operating in the 1980s along the Savannah River, introduced a large industrial employer into the county.

Burke County's Economy Today

Agriculture is still fundamental to Burke County's economy, with area farms producing cotton, peanuts, timber, and other row crops much as they have for generations.

The dominant economic force in the county today, however, is Plant Vogtle, the Southern Company nuclear plant on the Savannah River. A major expansion completed in the 2020s added two new reactors, making it the largest nuclear generating station in the country.

Between the nuclear plant's payroll, ongoing agricultural production, and a modest manufacturing base, Burke County's economy blends heavy industry with its long-standing rural character.
