A Brief History of Bulloch County
The Georgia legislature created Bulloch County on February 8, 1796, carving it from portions of Bryan and Screven counties. It was named for Archibald Bulloch, a Revolutionary-era leader who served as Georgia's first president and commander in chief after independence was declared.
For much of the nineteenth century Bulloch County's economy revolved around small farms growing cotton, corn, and other staples. By the early twentieth century the county had become one of the nation's leading producers of sea island cotton, and Statesboro had grown into a genuine commercial hub.
The founding of a teacher training school in Statesboro in the early 1900s planted the seed for what would eventually become Georgia Southern University. Jewish and other immigrant merchants built a thriving retail trade serving area farmers.
Bulloch County's Economy Today
Agriculture remains part of Bulloch County's economic base, but the modern economy rests on three main pillars: education, manufacturing, and healthcare. Georgia Southern University, based in Statesboro, is one of the region's largest employers.
Manufacturing has expanded significantly in recent years, with companies such as Briggs & Stratton producing small engines. A large Walmart distribution center in the county, among the company's largest in the world, anchors a growing logistics sector.
Healthcare also plays a substantial role, led by a regional medical center that serves patients from across southeast Georgia, even as peanuts, cotton, and timber continue to be grown throughout the surrounding countryside.
