A Brief History of Bryan County
Bryan County was formed on December 19, 1793, from land taken out of Chatham and Effingham counties, making it one of Georgia's older coastal counties. Lawmakers named it for Jonathan Bryan, a planter and civic leader who had arrived in the Georgia colony with James Oglethorpe decades earlier and went on to support the colony's break from British rule.
In the decades before the Civil War, the lower stretches of the county along the Ogeechee River became some of the most productive rice ground on the Georgia coast, with plantations on Bryan Neck relying on enslaved labor to build and maintain elaborate dikes and canals for tidal rice cultivation.
Rice cultivation declined after the Civil War, and the county's economic center of gravity shifted inland as railroads reached the area in the late 1800s. The town of Pembroke, laid out in 1890 along a new rail line, grew quickly as a hub for shipping turpentine and other naval stores. The twentieth century later brought Fort Stewart, a large Army post that reshaped the county's population and economy.
Bryan County's Economy Today
Bryan County's economy today is anchored by two very different institutions: Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi, and the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, a multibillion-dollar electric vehicle assembly plant in Ellabell that began building cars in late 2024.
The Hyundai plant has drawn a wave of parts suppliers and support businesses to the area, and combined with Fort Stewart's ongoing demand for housing, services, and contractors, this growth has made Bryan County one of the fastest-growing counties in Georgia and the nation.
Beyond manufacturing and the military, Bryan County benefits from its position between Savannah and the coast, drawing retail, healthcare, and service businesses. Communities such as Richmond Hill have grown into commuter suburbs for the Savannah metropolitan area.
