A Brief History of Brooks County
Brooks County was established on December 11, 1858, from portions of Lowndes and Thomas counties, in a section of south Georgia that had passed to United States control following an 1818 agreement.
The county was named for Preston S. Brooks, a South Carolina congressman, while the county seat, Quitman, honored John Quitman, a former Mississippi governor and Mexican War veteran.
Settlers moving down the Coffee Road from middle Georgia established communities centered on farming, education, and religion, and cotton plantations worked by enslaved laborers became the economic foundation of the antebellum county.
Brooks County's Economy Today
Row-crop farming remains central to Brooks County's economy, with peanuts and corn grown widely across the county alongside peach orchards concentrated in communities such as Barney.
Forestry and hunting preserves add further economic activity, taking advantage of the county's mix of managed pine land and habitat that supports quail, deer, and waterfowl.
Quitman, known locally as the Camellia City, serves as the county's retail, healthcare, and government center, anchoring an economy that remains predominantly agricultural and rural in character.
