Brantley County came into being when Georgia voters approved a constitutional amendment on November 2, 1920, forming the new county from portions of Charlton, Pierce, and Wayne counties.
The county is understood to be named for U.S. Representative William Gordon Brantley or his father, Benjamin Daniel Brantley, a Confederate veteran and merchant. The county seat moved from Hoboken to Nahunta in 1923.
A rail line built through the area in 1902 brought new residents and business construction, and for decades the county's economy leaned heavily on its forests, with timber and naval stores outweighing row-crop farming.
