A Brief History of Bradford County

Bradford County was originally organized in 1858 as New River County and was renamed Bradford County in 1861 in honor of Captain Richard Bradford, an early Confederate officer from Florida who was killed during the Civil War.

The county seat of Starke developed as a regional trade and agricultural center, and by the early twentieth century strawberries and other truck crops had become an important part of the local farm economy, grown on the sandy, well-drained soils common throughout the area.
