A Brief History of Bradford County

Bradford County was originally organized in 1858 as New River County and was renamed Bradford County in 1861 in honor of Captain Richard Bradford, an early Confederate officer from Florida who was killed during the Civil War.

The county seat of Starke developed as a regional trade and agricultural center, and by the early twentieth century strawberries and other truck crops had become an important part of the local farm economy, grown on the sandy, well-drained soils common throughout the area.

In the 1910s the state built a major prison complex near the community of Raiford within the county, which grew into one of Florida's principal correctional facilities and became a long-standing source of steady employment for area residents throughout the twentieth century.

Bradford County's Economy Today

Agriculture, particularly strawberry farming alongside other fruits and vegetables, remains an identifiable part of Bradford County's rural economy today, supported by the sandy soils and mild climate that have long made the area suitable for truck farming and seasonal produce.

State corrections and other government jobs tied to the prison complex near Raiford continue to provide an important source of employment for county residents, complementing the income generated by the area's farms and small businesses.

Small manufacturing, retail, and service businesses in and around Starke serve the county's population, and a number of residents commute to nearby Gainesville or Jacksonville for additional job opportunities not available within the county itself.
