A Brief History of Bleckley County
Bleckley County was formed in 1912 out of Pulaski County, and was named for Logan Bleckley, a former chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.
Its county seat, Cochran, began as a small community known as Dykesboro before its 1869 incorporation, and was later renamed for Judge Arthur Cochran, who helped bring the Macon and Brunswick Railroad through the area.
Turpentine production and lumber harvesting drove the county's economy through its early decades; as those forests were cleared, farmers turned the fertile soil left behind to cotton, peanuts, soybeans, and orchard crops such as peaches and pecans.
