A Brief History of Bibb County
Bibb County was established by the Georgia legislature on December 9, 1822, out of portions of Houston, Jones, Monroe, and Twiggs counties. Macon, its county seat, was incorporated the following year.
The county was named for William Wyatt Bibb, a Georgia-born physician and politician who went on to become the first elected governor of Alabama, while Macon itself honored North Carolina statesman Nathaniel Macon.
Macon's position on the fall line of the Ocmulgee River made it a natural head of navigation, and after the first steamboat arrived in 1829 the city grew into a major cotton market. Textile manufacturing followed, and the Bibb Manufacturing Company became one of the region's largest employers.
